About the Role

Cognita AI is hiring a Senior Vice President, Legal whose mandate covers owning legal strategy, governance and enterprise risk across its artificial intelligence business. Based in San Francisco, CA on a on-site basis, the role reports to the executive vice president or chief executive officer and carries a remit of National function leadership with budget ownership. Cognita AI is an applied AI company deploying models into enterprise workflows. The appointed leader inherits 150–500 people and will be measured on the strategic priorities set out below rather than activity.

The leadership mandate

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Manage the external counsel panel and legal spend
  • Advise the board on governance and fiduciary matters
  • Lead in-house counsel, compliance and corporate secretarial teams

First 12 months

Strategic Priorities

Reduce contracting cycle time without weakening risk posture
Strengthen the compliance programme ahead of upcoming regulation
Bring more work in-house to control external legal spend

Day to day

Key Responsibilities

  • Own contracting standards, delegation of authority and governance policy
  • Lead the legal workstream on M&A, financing and major commercial deals
  • Oversee compliance programmes, training and regulatory engagement
  • Manage disputes and litigation strategy to protect enterprise value
  • Advise the executive committee on commercial, regulatory and litigation risk

Leadership profile

Qualifications

  • Command of commercial contracting, governance and regulatory matters
  • JD and admission to practise in a US jurisdiction
  • Senior in-house legal leadership experience
  • 14+ years, including 5+ leading leaders of progressive leadership experience
  • Experience operating in the artificial intelligence sector or an adjacent regulated market

Track record

Leadership Experience

  • Proven leadership of 150–500 people, directly and through other leaders
  • Accountability for a budget or P&L consistent with National function leadership with budget ownership
  • Experience presenting to executive committees, boards or investment committees
