About the Role

Continental Energy Group is hiring a Chief Legal Officer whose mandate covers owning legal strategy, governance and enterprise risk across its energy business. Based in Boston, MA on a hybrid basis, the role reports to the chief executive officer and the board and carries a remit of Enterprise-wide, with full P&L and board accountability. Continental Energy Group is a diversified energy operator with generation and transmission assets. The appointed leader inherits 400–1,800 across the function people and will be measured on the strategic priorities set out below rather than activity.

The leadership mandate

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead in-house counsel, compliance and corporate secretarial teams
  • Manage the external counsel panel and legal spend
  • Advise the board on governance and fiduciary matters

First 12 months

Strategic Priorities

Strengthen the compliance programme ahead of upcoming regulation
Bring more work in-house to control external legal spend
Reduce contracting cycle time without weakening risk posture

Day to day

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the legal workstream on M&A, financing and major commercial deals
  • Oversee compliance programmes, training and regulatory engagement
  • Manage disputes and litigation strategy to protect enterprise value
  • Advise the executive committee on commercial, regulatory and litigation risk
  • Own contracting standards, delegation of authority and governance policy

Leadership profile

Qualifications

  • JD and admission to practise in a US jurisdiction
  • Senior in-house legal leadership experience
  • Command of commercial contracting, governance and regulatory matters
  • 18+ years, including 6+ at executive committee level of progressive leadership experience
  • Experience operating in the energy sector or an adjacent regulated market

Track record

Leadership Experience

  • Proven leadership of 400–1,800 across the function people, directly and through other leaders
  • Accountability for a budget or P&L consistent with Enterprise-wide, with full P&L and board accountability
  • Experience presenting to executive committees, boards or investment committees
